Hello! Ann Marie:

I don’t think that techniques to treat stuttering should be divided into “eastern” or “western”. All of the techniques are directed to the causes or pathogenesis of stuttering disorder. Both eastern techniques and Western techniques have their advantages and weakness. I myself learned something important from Western ideas. The treatment of chronic stuttering should involve multiple techniques and persistent practicing by chronic stutterer himself.

As to the question about “cure”. If “cure” means free of stuttering at all, it is impossible, because stuttering cannot be eliminated completely, as in my case. However, it is not necessary in real life. The chief problem of chronic stuttering is the loss of ability to communicate orally and to work in many kinds of professions, it is possible to regain the lost ability through proper instruction and practice.

Consequently, if the definition of “cure” is to regain the lost ability to communicate orally and to work in any kind of profession (which is also the cherished desire of all chronic stutterers), “cure” is possible. The possibility has been suggested by some successful cases and needs to be further explored.
