I see two roles 1. diagnosis. determining whether the stutter needs behavioural, emotional or cognitive therapy.

2. guide / counsellor. I feel it is important the therapist have good knowledge of the range of sevices available, always aware that "different strokes suit different folks". I also believe the old saying that "when the student is ready the teacher appears." So if therapy is not progressing then it may be necessary to refer to another practioner.
