Shana, thanks for your comments. First, you can print this paper from this site if you wish. Print it like you would any other document.

I incorporate faith into the therapy process only at the leading of the client. If the client mentions something about God, faith, etc., then I use that as an opening if appropriate. What I usually say is that I have this paper I have been working on that deals with what the Bible says about dealing with infirmities. I inform them that I was surprised at how applicable Biblical information was in dealing with stuttering. If they are interested or make a request for the paper, then I give it to them. I tell them to look it over and if they wish to discuss it further we can at a later meeting. If they say nothing else, then I don't mention it again usually. I say usually because I would consider it okay to ask a client if he or she had read the paper if that client had expressed a keen interest during a previous meeting. It may be that they had read it and did not remember to mention it at a later meeting. Usually, however, I let them bring the paper up when they are ready.

There is sufficient scripture quoted in the paper to last a while I believe! Do I pray with a client? I have not done that to date but would not hesitate to do so if appropriate. I have had occassion to pray with students when they inform me of a crisis they are experiencing (sudden death of a sibling, parent, or discovery of a serious illness, etc.). This has to be taken on a case by case basis of course.

My next step in all this, however, is to inform certain clients up front that I want to approach therapy from a Biblical perspective and begin with the paper as it is laid out. What would you think about that? You have seen in this conference all the interest in the Lidcombe approach. Well, I think there should be an interest in a Biblical approach and I may just report on that next year if given the opportunity to do so!

Thanks again, Shana, for writing and for your questions.
