Alan, you have some interesting points. Yes, I can speak to using the outdoors in therapy.

First, we have used a ROPES course in our family program. Talk about a powerful tool! Many of our families would probably tell you that the things they learned trying to complete outdoor problem solving activities were the most important part of the program. I would agree with them. We have used ROPES both at the beginning and end of the program. I think I like the beginning the best but either way is good.

Second, one of the first clients in my private practice was a three year old twin. There were three older children in the family making a total of five children and two parents. My little office was not big enough for all seven plus me. So, we worked at the home of the family and most of our work was done while sitting around the picnic table outside. We could see first hand how the parents and children related to the therapy concepts in their own environment. I will never forget the time when the child who stuttered came running up to this Dad to show him something and the Dad put into practice right then what we had been talking about. That would have never happened indoors. The experience with that family was a total success!

I have not made spiritual applications while working outside but it sure would not be hard to do that!

Take care and thanks again for writing.
