Thank you for your question Heidi. I agree that there are clients who work too hard on both the respiratory and larnygeal areas. I would most likely encourage the client to think more about the abdominal area, with the goal of maintaining only slight muscle tension there (it does not need to be a big push). As for the laryngeal area, I would encourage the client to visualize the air flowing THROUGH the laryngeal area, "fluttering" or "engaging" the folds as it passes. The hope is that they will use enough effort to to allow full interaction between the vocal folds and the air stream, without creating excessive tension and or laryngeal resistance.
