Hi Sharon,

I would think the same rationale for eliminating clavicular breathing in voice would also apply to stuttering. We eliminate it because is seems to bring tension to the upper body in general, and does not promote relaxation. Secondly, a more abdominal focus seems to result in better control over breath support for speech since because of the orientation of expiration muscles and rib cage structure, the speaker can get better leverage /control over breathing by focussing on the abdominal/diaphragmatic area. Note: I prefer the term "abdominal breathing" or abdominal focus, since the client can relate better to this area (vs. "diaphragmatic").
