Bob: Caroline Bowen referred me to your wonderful article. FYI, I am a stutterer who does "get it." So very well. Not unexpected, your experiences mirror so many of mine. As a college social science teacher who has a moderate and sporadic stutter, it was an enormous challenge to stand facing the fluent for 25 yrs. and conduct classes, including lecturing, not knowing from day to day if the gift of fluency would occur. One of the chapters in my book, "The Stuckerer," chronicles some of these experiences, as well as reactions from colleagues and students to my dysfluency. To add to the myths and prejudices that accompanies those who don't "get it," is depression - often created from those statements and body languages that demonstrate clearly how stutterers are truly perceived. Thank you for a truthful article.
