Bob,

In my position, I've met quite a few SLPs. To the profession's credit, most of them are kind, generous, compassionate, caring, hard-working professionals trying to do their best. They "get it." They deserve complete respect. And many of them are stutterers.

Then there are SLPs who appear to be in the wrong profession or, at least, should not treat people who stutter. They are arrogant, hostile, demeaning, derisive, and other such attributes. Frequently they tell someone like you: "Physician heal thyself." They don't "get it," and never will. They deserve no respect. To the best of my knowledge, none of them are stutterers. I have never met an SLP who "doesn't get it" who stutters. They lack the knowledge.

Whenever someone asks me if they should see a "stuttering" SLP or a "fluent" SLP, I recommend the "stuttering" SLP; simply because, as you have so eloquently written, they "get it."

Mike
