Thanks Walt for that amazing reply! It did remind me of the countless times that parents would ask me, "do you have children?" When I responded "no", they would say, "then you can't understand." Now that I have a daughter, I have earned instant credibility (which is an interesting occurance).
However, I do not stutter and I most likely never will. So the only way for me to truly understand stuttering is through my clients and friends who stutter. I loved your idea of preparing students for the first time a client says "You don't understand because you don't stutter?". Personally, I use this as a time to establish our relationship and destroy any thought that I am the expert and I have the magic cure. I tell the client that they are right but now they have to teach me about their stuttering.
