Hi Christie:

My stuttering has never been that much of an issue in my career because it isn't all that severe. The letter-writer's estimate of my speech as being "50% stuttered" is way off. Had he been estimating my weight, he probably would have had me pegged at 450 or 500 pounds, I imagine. ;-)>

I've generally been quite fluent when dealing with clients and families and can't recall any negative reactions from anyone. The only case I can think of was the first stutterer I worked with when I was in college. He told me that initially he didn't know how much I could help him because when I called him to set up therapy, I stuttered more on the phone than he did. However, he told me that after I had worked with him for nearly a semester. I was still working on my own speech at that time.

It may be more of an issue for more disfluent SLPs, but in my experience, clients often appreciate working with someone who has been "on the other side of the table."

I hope this helps.
