I think it's important to stress that just because a person doesn't stutter it doesn't mean they can't understand what a person who stutters experiences. It may be a challenge, but as a number of people who have posted in this discussion have pointed out, there are a lot of nonstuttering SLPs who "get it" when it comes to stuttering. (Some of my best friends are fluent SLPs.)

The point I am trying to make is that a lot of SLPs don't want to make the effort to "get it." All they see is the fluency (or lack of fluency) and so, as far as they are concerned, that's all that is important.

I think it's unfair, short-sighted, narrow-minded, [insert your favorite negative adjective here] of them to take this stance. For many people, there's more to stuttering than fluency. Not for ALL, mind you, but for many.

The letter-writer I quote, and others of his ilk, don't seem to want to acknowledge this. I think that is a tragedy.
