Jodi, I agree that in order to effectively treat stuttering a clinician needs to have both knowledge and skills. Of course one could argue ( and many do) about the specific skills necessary for that treatment. I think the important thing to realize is that the application of both knowledge and skills is part science and part art. The "art of practice" is gained through experience and continued learning. Every professional naturally gravitates toward an area of practice that interests them. They seek additional knowledge and training to help hone their skill. The really good ones also understand their limitations and refer to others those conditions they feel inadequately trained to treat.
