Hi Lee,

I was a full-time school SLP for two years and am back doing it part-time along with a private practice specializing in stuttering (with Kristin Chmela). You said several times (in the article and answers to questions) about the ethical obligation for SLPs to refer clients to more qualified SLPs.

This presents a huge problem in the public schools. If a school SLP refers a child to an outside source, then the school is required to pay for it. Suffice it to say that the SLP will probably not have a job if they force the district to pay for outside therapy.

I've tried to bolster the inadequate knowledge base of some school SLPs by giving in-service presentations in every district I've worked in and setting up a listserv solely for SLPs working with clients who stutter. I think the answer here lies more in educating the masses or finding a way for school SLPs to be able to refer without the district having to pay for the therapy. I'm sure that many SLPs would like to be able to refer their stuttering clients, but feel like they can't due to this issue.
