Hi Sophie,

Nice article - it is great that you have such supportive and caring parents.

Stuttering is hugely misunderstood by the public and, frequently, by members of one's own family. That has not been the case in your household.

I feel that persons who stutter can play an important part in making others aware of the problems that we encounter. I regularly give talks to community organisations about my lifetime of stuttering and find that they are so misinformed.

I did not talk to my own children (now adults)about my stuttering until recent times. I broke the ice by allowing them to view a video of a series of presentations that I gave (about the same subject) to trainee speech and language pathologists. They were greatly moved by the experience.
