Dear Carolyn:

Sorry it has taken a few days to get back to you.

It seems to us that a parent would cause the most damage by doing or saying anything to make the dysfluent child feel that he or she is doing something wrong and ought to be able somehow to correct the stutter. Surely no child wants to stutter, so the child would correct it if he or she could.

The dysfluent child’s self-esteem needs to be reinforced, not undermined.

We hope this answers your query. Please contact us if you have any other questions.

Nicky and David
