A great article! When I read the description of the listener who cares just a little too much, I was remembered of what happened to me at the NSA congress in Chicago. I don't stutter, but attended the event with my husband. The hotel staff was obviously very well prepared, and handled everyone with - yes, just a little too much care. One evening I was approaching the reception lady to ask about something. I was wearing my name tag - so it was obvious that I was a participant. As I opened my mouth to speak, the lady quickly arranged her face into the most caring, listening expression she could possibly think of. I felt extremely uncomfortable, and after that I have been speculating if my husband and others who stutter simply close their eyes during a block to avoid looking at an overcaring face?
