Dale,
I am a graduate student at West Virginia University studying under Dr. Ken St. Louis. He advises people who stutter to use humor, and I can see that you whole-heartedly agree.
I thought your paper had honest opinions that many stutterers are likely to have. I read some of the replies to your paper, and I can see that other graduate students, like myself, are afraid to tell our clients to “bite the bullet” and just be themselves. Much easier said than done, I think. It’s very helpful to beginning clinicians to have a frank point of view from someone who stutters…it helps me to know that it’s okay to encourage my clients to overcome their fears, challenge themselves, and try to help themselves by helping others.
This paper doesn’t just apply to stuttering…I’ll use it as wise words to apply to other things in life.
Thanks, Jessica Fair
