The Woody Starkweather story could actually be true, I think! When I met my husband Paul he hadn't changed the lenses of his glasses for about twenty years, and obviously needed new ones. I know that for him saying one letter at the time is VERY difficult, he most certainly will get a huge block. Now, I went with him and told the optometrist that he had to wait until the sound popped out of Paul's mouth, and if there was a long hesitation it didn't necessarily mean that he couldn'tr read the letter (in fact Paul taught himself to read at the age of three, but didn't start speaking to the age of three either.) Well, I guess Paul did a smart thing also, instead of substituting the letter for another one he used starters like "This is an A", or "I believe this is a B". So everything went well, and he got his new glasses which are really good! Perhaps the bottom line here is "If you neeed new lenses, bring your wife or use starters or both. But whatever you do, don't subsitute!"
