As Russ indicates, it has taken decades for most us to become comfortable with advertising our stuttering. What accelerates that process is participation in self-help groups such as the NSA in the US. I have seen many schoolchildren in the NSA's youth programs who have reached a level of self-acceptance that I did not achieve until middle age.
