I have difficulty with the use of the word "advertising" since too many SLP's and /or stutterers think it should be done for the sake of doing....another assignment. I'd like to get another word for it...but in the meanwhile, my caution is that it should be for a purpose: to educate others, to let them know of the stutterer's rights, and , yes, even to put the listener at ease by offering "open communication". I had two clients who were stopped by the police, told they failed the road-side tests for drugs and alchohol.....both requested more formal testing but did not get it! They both were ticketed for reckless driving. NEITHER , even tho' one went through all the steps of taking pictures of the scene, etc. , did not go to court for fear that his stuttering would receive the same reaction and then he would also be paying court costs!!!!! I offered to go with both...but they had been demeaned too much for comfort. The Parkinson's Society has a very small card they have sufferers carry that has a very brief but significant few statements on the back indicating that their speech nor their movements indicate drug use. I'm thinking of having our Support Group in Tampa create this for everyone...I think this might be helpful....your thoughts?????
