What has helped most of us develop the courage to advertise our stuttering is the support of other people who stutter. Nothing else comes close to the experience of watching someone else talk openly about their stuttering, and observing the results. In addition to cheerleading and the occasional gentle nudge, the best thing a SLP can do is to bring a client to a support meeting or workshop. Note that I said "bring" and not "send." The first contact with other stutterers can be daunting, and the presence of the clinician helps.
