There’s a lot of good advice on this subject, much of it posted on the Stuttering Home Page. One notable example is Steve Hood’s paper in this conference. A couple of thoughts: --Initially, many of us just want (desperately) to stop stuttering and haven’t thought through how we want our lives to change. SLPs can help clients set realistic goals in terms of the freedom to make a speech, order at the drive-up window, run a meeting, etc. –which may have very little to do with fluency. --Contact with other stutterers can do a lot to leverage the benefits of therapy, but showing up at a support group or conference is a big step for many people. It helps when the clinician accompanies the client to the first support meeting, but I’ve rarely seen this happen.
