For twenty years I stuttered with no way of "working on it" that helped, yet I had a rather positive attitude about myself even then (before getting into UCLA therapy with the Sheehans). But when I found there was a way I could "work on my speech" that was really effective, I attacked it with great zeal. That was the turning point in my life as a stutteretr. I think the most important thing a therapist can give a stutterer is the confidence that comes from having a really effective way of stuttering easily and hopefully the motivation to fully acquire and assimilate those skills. This gives the confidence that speech can be handled acceptably and doesn't need to be run away from. thanks for asking.
