Dear Jacque & Adnrea:

Thanks for your interest in the CPS Syndrome.

You might want to read the following article that appeared in 1993:

Cooper, E.B. (1993). Chronic Perseverative Stuttering: A harmful or helpful construct? American Journal of Speech Language Pathology, 3, 11-22.

Recognizing the existance of the CPS Syndrome influences how we address all children presenting stuttering symptoms. As you suggest, diagnosing CPS in children is problematic, but that does not preclude our striving to develop fluency enhancing feelings and attitudes (as well as behaviors) that are appropriate for all those who experience stuttering.

Our latest treatment programs (one for children and one for adolescents and adults) address these issues in detail and present reproducible assessment protocols that can help us in identifying the type of stuttering syndrome (Development, Remediable, or Chronic Perseverative) the client is experiencing.

You've raised some good questions. In addition to the reference cited above, our programs are available through proed.com as "Cooper Personalized Fluency Control Therapy" (2003).

Again, thanks for your interest.

Gene
