Dear Debbie

Your thoughtful comments on the article are deeply appreciated. I found myself saying, "yes, yes, yes!" to what you were writing. I've been on what could be almost be termed a "crusade" for the past 30+ years in doing away with those frequency-of-stuttering-based assessments used so frequently in "measuring" progress in therapy. I coined the term "frequency fallacy" many years ago to make my arguement against them, and only in the past few years do I see a movement in the "trenches" to abandon such procedures to include the affective, behavioral, and cognitive (ABC)components of stuttering.

May I suggest you check into our most recent publications which present various assessment protocols that address all of these factors (the ABCs) and can be used effectively to indicate meaningful changes in the client's stuttering:

Cooper, E.B., & Cooper, C.S. (2003). Cooper Personalized Fluency Control Therapy (Childrens Version and Adolescent and Adult Version). Austin, TX:ProEd.

Again, thank you so much for your comments. It is so delightfully reinforcing to learn that what someone writes is actually meaningful to others. You made my day.

Gene
