Dear Alisha:

Thanks for your interest in the CPS syndrome. You ask an unanserable question as to "how much" of the CPS is "psychological." I think it is safe to conclude that chronic stuttering results from coexisting and interacting neurological, psychological, and environmental factors. As to how much anyone of these factors plays in an indiduals stuttering is beyond our present understanding of the problem.

My mentioning the psychiatrist was perhaps misleading to you. When I met with Todd after his "returned," I quickly concluded that he might need medication because he appeared so agitated, so I asked his vocational counselor to arrange an appointment with a psychiatrist to facilitate his receiving medication if the psychiatrist thought medication was appropriate. I did not mean to imply that individuals experiencing CPS routinely require psychiatric assistance.

Again, thanks for your interest. I'm pleased to know that you found the paper informative.

Gene
