Dear Angelique:

Thank you for your interest in the CPS. You raise thoughtful questions which I will try to which I will try to be responsive.

Has it been accepted? I have no data has to its acceptance. I do note that it is increasingly discussed in recent major texts in stuttering and I continue to receive correspondence suggesting that it has been found useful to clinicians in conceptualizing possible courses of treatment for those with chronic stuttering.

Studies to support its existance? Studies far too numerous to mention here support clinical observations as to the existance of chronic stuttering. The CPS is only a construct - a hypothetical construct - created to assist researchers and clinicians in conceptualizing in a clinically useful manner a mass amount of data.

I recommend you review the following reference which may prove instructive: Cooper, E.B.(1993). Chronic Perseverative Stuttering Syndrome: A harmful or helpful construct? American Journal of Speech Language Pathology, 3, 11-22.

It's relationship to children and adolescents? We have described three observable syndromes in the stuttering population (Developmental, Remediable, and Chronic Perseverative). We have developed protocols to differentiate which clients are experiencing each syndrome as well as treatment programs appropriate for each syndrome. Time does not permit me to go into those here. However, I refer you to our most recently published treatment programs which descibe and discuss in detail the issues you have raised:

Again, thank you for your interest. If you have any follow-up questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at ebcooper@msn.com.
