Dear Courtney:

What thoughful comments and excellent questions you raise - wish you were in one my classes!

I think you would find the following reference of interest: Cooper, E.B. (1993). Chronic Perseverative Stuttering Syndrome: A harmful or helpfull construct? American Journal of Speech Language Pathology, 3, 11-22.

In that article are representative comments - negative as well as positive- from individuals experiencing chronic stuttering. I think it provides one with an accurate picture of how those who stutter and those who treat them have reacted to the CPS. My perception, which obviously has to be questioned since I created the construct, is that it has been far more widely accepted as a helpful construct by both clients and clinicians than it has been judged as being harmful. But, at any rate, I do suggest you read that article.

I don't recall ever having a client withdrawing from the treatment program because of the discussion of the CPS syndrome. Discussions with clients usually include descriptions of the two other syndromes we describe: the Developmental Syndrome and the Remediable Syndrome which we have written about in several other articles. If interested, I would suggest you review our recently published assessment and treatment programs that discuss all these issues at lenght:

Cooper, E.B. & Cooper, C.S. (2003). Cooper Personalized Fluency Control Therapy - 3rd Edition - Adolescent and Adult Version. Austin, TX:ProEd.

Cooper, E.B. & Cooper, C.S. (2003). Cooper Personalized Fluency Control Therapy - 3rd Edition - Children's Version. Austin,TX:ProEd.

I suggest these programs because they include detailed suggestions as to how clinicians can communicate the concepts described above.

I'm beginning to sound like a used car salesman - sorry about that. However, I judge your interest as being sincere and I want you to know about the availability of the programs.

Again, thanks for your interest. Best wishes in your studies and if you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact me at <ebcooper@msn.com>.

Dr. C
