Doug, thank you for your article. The focus of your article is an area which I'm very interested in, and have been trying to introduce to clients, and that is: the less focus on the actual stuttering moment, the better. We should try to focus our attention on the overall communication process instead. As you say, the emotional arousal in any given interaction, the kind of self-talk we do, anticipation, and I think, "pushing." I know there were other elements you mentioned as well. It's my aim to help clients take the pressure off themselves to be totally fluent---there is no such thing. I've had difficulty convincing a 17 yr. old, that the emphasis does not have to be on a particular dysfluent word, but rather on the bigger picture of his overall communication. I hope I am making sense---but anyway, I really appreciate the de-emphasis on just being "fluent"--that is a very narrow approach to stuttering treatment.
