I too, like the analogy of a cocoon, not only for the reasons Judy Butler so eloquently states, but also what it tells me as a clinician. I've read that if a butterfly is "helped" by having someone else remove the cocoon, it is unable to fly on its own. The butterfly needs the struggle involved in breaking out of its own cocoon in order to be "whole." As a clinician, I can't be the one to break the cocoon. I can be there only to guide and support as the person who stutters does the hard work involved.
