Hi Beth

I only saw the therapist for three or four months, and not on a very intensive basis – maybe once a week. It made absolutely no difference to me at all! I think we went through the motions, knowing that it wasn’t going to make any difference. We did the standard stuff -- slow speech, smooth onset, etc. I think I only stuck with it for that long because it was novel. (I mean, it sure was novel! I was in my late 50’s, and I’d never had therapy!)

Ed Feuer has been saying on the STUTT-L list that we need a team approach, which should include at least an SLP and a psychiatrist/psychologist. I think that idea has a lot going for it. It would have been great if my psychiatrist had really got his head around just how DISTRESSING a covert stammer can be … and worked together with the speech therapist.
