The iceberg has been conceptually around since about 1970, but has only recently been viewed a really significant tool to help in the overall understanding of stuttering. Actually I began to get interested in covert stuttering in about 1999 and in the course of learning about that, I uncovered the iceberg from a Stutt-L post from Woody Starkweather in 2001. I then realized that the iceberg analogy would be an incredibly useful tool in understanding all kinds of stuttering, not just covert.
So don't feel like the Lone Ranger, Alan. We learned about it about the same time!
And boy howdy (as we say here in Texas - pardner!), you are absolutely correct in your statement that stuttering is not JUST a speech problem! It's a holistic problem if ever there was one!
You still need to teach me how to say that gosh-awful long Welsh town... <smile>
