Yes indeed-- easier said than done. For sure.

And yes- it is possible to combine fluency shaping with stuttering modification. Clearly, stuttering modification does not set fluency as the goal and does not attempt to reduce the percent stuttered syllables down to a number such as < 1%. The focus is on refucing the severity and teaching the coping skills necessary to modify it.

And with respect to fluency shaping, I am not necessarily against these principles and techniques when done in ways that allow the PWS to move toward increased fluency. The concern I am trying to raise is that by "chasing the fluency god" and trying to reduce stuttering moments, there is the risk that the person will try to interiorize the stuttering, and be more covert, and in the long run, this leads to major problems: e.,g, the return of fear, anticipation and avoidance.
