Since stuttering is maintained by escape and avoidance behaviors, I feel that maintaining appropriate eye-contact is an appropriate goal for those that exhibit this behavior. In working with an adolescent pws, my supervisor showed him his eye contact aversion via videotaping. Once he saw what he was doing, he described it as "Exorcist stuff" and agreed that it should be targetted. What are some other ways for a pws to discover that he/she is averting eye contact?
