When the behavior is positively identified as aversion preceding and/or during the stutter, it always comes from "I don't want to see how they react to my stuttering." THere is usually a time-line of events behind it.

A three year old may have been sternly corrected or received negative listener feedback during the stutter. A teenager has likely had a number of comments, looks, etc. that are a reference for the aversion. So, aversion has a positive intention. The pws does it to protect themself. From what? The POSSIBILITY of a reaction they perceive as negative.

Research somatic memory to understand the recall of these events and the feelings locked into these events.

Through coaching we help them identify the old positive intention and then make a decision that it does NOT serve them well.

Cheers, Tim
