Respect your client's wishes and explore this further.
I would thank him for his frank feedback. I'd ask when do you want it, how much etc. to get to his internal criteria for "too much eye contact." You want to explore this so that you are not on pins and needles in therapy wondering if you are looking too much. That would be very awkward.
Your close looking also gives you more evidence gathering skills. Explain that, too.
