Devon- I'm not trying to avoid responding to your question but it's difficult for me to know how to resond to a client (re. humor or anything else) until I'm somewhat calibrated to them and know things about them such as their energy, intelligence, natural wit, motivation, etc. etc. I suppose that I generaly do it by showing my natural curiousity and interest in them and their patterns of stuttering. I think that the very nature of treatment for stuttering has to do with client's developing their own locus of control, developing self-efficacy for doing the tasks at hand and developing the necessary skills, changing their view of themselves and the problem, changing their core constructs of themselves and what is possible, and generally healing themselves. Yikes, that was quite a sentence that covered lots. It's a cyclical process and messy, certainly not linear, and different for each person. I guess, in the final analysis, I try to follow their lead and help them get to where they want to go....even if it's not where I would prefer they go. Of course, that's another story. Thank you for your interesting question.
