I find it interesting to learn that Social Phobia Disorder and Stuttering involve similar neural substrates. Obviously stuttering itself can cause anxiety of speaking and social situations and anxiety of speaking situations can in turn worsen stuttering behavior. I was wondering what the theory is as to why SSRI's have been shown to improve stuttering behavior. Does stuttering behavior improve with antidepressants because of a lessening of the anxiety that can aggravate stuttering? Is it the lack of anxiety the person feels about the stuttering behaviour that is more of an improvement when antidepressants cause the emotional effects of stuttering to become less of an issue? Similarily, with the neurotransmitter Dopamine, is it a decrease in the fluidity of movement caused by a decrease in dopamine that causes a person to stutter while the decrease in dopamine can also cause a more depressed state?

I thought this was an excellent article Thank you for sharing
