Thank you for your question. Research indicates that the Lidcombe Program is very likely to be effective with a child aged 5 years. Almost all the research to date showing that the Lidcombe Program has an ameliorative effect on stuttering has been done with children up to 6 years of age. Clinical research on over 300 children in Australia and the United Kingdom has shown that the time taken to complete the first stage of the program is different for each child, with the average being around 11 weekly clinic visits. Children whose stuttering is more severe tend to take longer than children whose stuttering is milder. 90% of children complete Stage 1 after 22 clinic visits. It is important to keep in mind that these statistics were gathered from children who received the Program as specified in the treatment Manual. The Manual is available on the website of the Australian Stuttering Research Centre and parents can download it to find out how the Program should be conducted. There is other information on the website about the Lidcombe Program and about stuttering in general.
