Thank you for the interesting scenario you have presented. I will address it on the understanding that the treatment I would use for a preschooler would be the Lidcombe Program. In the Lidcombe Program parents actually deliver the treatment in the child’s everyday environment, so the treatment would be unlikely to be effective if the parents are not concerned about the child’s stuttering and/or are not motivated to do the Program. By the same token, one would not want to invoke concern in the parents at this point, as the child may still recover naturally and it is known that waiting for up to a year is unlikely to jeopardise the child’s response to treatment. In the end, since every child and family is different, individual circumstances need to be taken into account in deciding when to implement the Program.
