Thank you for your question. However, it is not an easy one to answer! The work of Dr. Yairi and colleagues shows that severity of stuttering, at least as indicated by SLD counts, does not predict natural recovery (see reference below). However, children with fewer that 3 SLD/100 syllables are not included in the stuttering group in Dr. Yairi’s research, because 3 or more SLD/100 syllables is one of the inclusion criteria. Consequently, there are no data to tell us whether children with fewer than 3 SLD/100 syllables are more likely to recover—given that they are judged to be stuttering in the first place (SLDs are not necessarily stutters).
