Well, you make some interesting points here! It is beyond my brief to discuss the merits of various treatments. However, I will say that the treatment of choice for me is the Lidcombe Program because it is supported by considerable scientific evidence. Of course, I am not on neutral ground here because I have been involved in researching the Program! The personality of the child and family circumstances do not influence the decision to use the Lidcombe Program because the implementation of the Program is adjusted to accommodate these factors. As a general statement, I believe that all treatments for early stuttering come at a cost—in terms of imposition on the child and/or family; so in my view decisions to intervene should be based on evidence of effectiveness rather than on the premise that treatment will do no harm.
