I agree with Dale's comments about the younger children. As far as the adolescent is concerned, Janet and I have seen a number of adults and adolescents who are actively using and/or drinking compulsively. We always refuse to work with them until they stop using. There is no point anyway. An addict or alcoholic is unable to focus on themselves in a meaningful way until they have stopped focusing on the substance.
This is an area that I wish ASHA would devote more published pages to.
