I don't think there are any recent findings that bear conclusively on the initial causes of stuttering. The brain imaging studies have not controlled adequately for the effects that stuttering has on brain function.

What we do know, however, is that for most stutterers the reactions, behaviors, feelings, and beliefs that develop after stuttering has already begun constitute most of the disorder. The initial cause is almost irrelevant. And we do know how to help stutterers get past all those reactions, behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Usually, when stutterers get beyond the reactive part of stuttering, they find that there is little, and often nothing, left to deal with.
