Yes, Dean had a lot of interests besides stuttering. He liked a good joke, for example (and even not-so-good ones). At his memorial service in Iowa City, most folks talked more about his humanity than his contributions in the area of stuttering. Husband, father, grandfather, church leader, community contributor...it went on and on.
Truly a great man but a very nice man. It seems that humanity is the key ingredient - I wish more folks had it.
