Mentors have been important to me in two ways: in my profession (writing and consulting) and as a person coming to terms with stuttering.

I am often aware of my "pedigree" when I work: a way of turning a phrase I learned from one mentor, an approach to problem solving picked up from another.

Mentors also have helped me in dealing with my stuttering. Some were clinicians such as Hugo Gregory, the first person I met who had the guts to stutter voluntarily, and Dave Williams, who taught me that it's okay to laugh about stuttering.

I met countless others in stuttering self-help: people who taught me that stuttering is no barrier to being a persuasive speaker, lively conversationalist and even a party animal.
