This theme of student assignment in general, and educating the pubic in particular, is both interesting and important. I have already commented that I think I may modify my assignments in the future to include some components for instructing listeners about stuttering.

But I want to add to the comment Judy made, and her question to Howie.

Mobile is a large city compared to where you folks are. Students can do the assigment over a very large area; and some students commute from home, so they could do there assignments in places anywhere from Pensacola to the east over to Biloxi to the west.

I cannot speak to the Mobile area, Judy, but I had similar assignments when I was on faculty in Bowling Gren, Ohio. The population of BG was smaller, and I do believe that over the years, reactions were gradually more positive. This is good-- but then I also realize that maybe the "word was out" that it was a student assignment at the university. Yikes !! I hope that they did not think it an assignment from a course in abnormal psychology.

Bottom Line: I am really going to give some thought to Howie's idea of combining the student experience along with listener educatin. In so doing, I agree with what Judy said about not wanting the student to immediately seek "forgiveness" to relieve the "secondary guilt" (Sheehan) they may have experienced while stuttering to the clerk.

I hope other will comments on this--- INCLUDING STUDENTS. I would expecially like to hear from students in terms of how THEY thnk this assignment could be more beneficial.
