Dr. Stewart, I really enjoy the idea of using metaphors in the therapy process. In just a few words a person can attain a greater understanding of something and expand their concept of it.

I love your metaphor of the therapy process as an artistic work. I think the only part I disagree with is beginning the process with a paper that has been washed of any other marks. Although it is a good goal start the process with new ideas and being open to new experiences, I think it’s impossible to remove all marks that have been left by previous experiences. In fact, my opinion is that these previous marks are what bring together the person who stutters and the therapist and that these marks are valuable. My suggestion is to begin with a piece of handmade paper with its rough edges and bumpy imperfections, which might be more similar to the therapy process and human nature.
