For several years I have incorporated a published program into my therapy, The Fluency Development Program by Susan Meyers, when working with my preschool age dysfluency students. This program is based on the old fable of the “Tortise and the Hare”, revised with stories of the “Turtle and the Racehorse”. My young students really relate to the activities of comparing and contrasting the slow and easy turtle to the fast and bumpy racehorse. The children quickly identify with the characters and express themselves such as “I used turtle talk” or “that was bumpy like Mr. Racehorse”. This may be a simale, rather than a metaphor, but it has definetly been successful in helping my very young ones understand their therapy.
