My name is Elizabeth Sliver, and I am graduate student studying speech-language pathology at West Virginia University. Your paper, "Applying the Wisdome of Psychology to Stuttering," took a profound look at the nature of stuttering as a disorder manifested in self-criticism. I appreciate your explanation of the problem (self-criticism/lack of awareness) accompanied by strategies and possible resolutions to the problem. In many self-help books, the authors define the problem, but they do not clearly delineate ways to remedy the problem, and your paper did just that! I enjoyed your use of quotes...some of them were quite funny, and others were profound. Artistotle's quote in particular would be one to keep in mind for anyone who wishes to introspect. Your advice of only trying to deal with relevant issues within a person's own control seems critical to self-acceptance. You have demonstrated that since no one can overcome all obstacles, focusing solely on what is able to be controlled will help to foster self-acceptance and a sense of accomplishment. Overall, the strategies defined in your paper that addressed problems associated with stuttering are directly applicable to anyone wishing to better themselves, and I would recommend that everyone read your paper!
